Whatcha Reading? - Naruto VS Zombies by Crisis -

Hello, thar. Meinos Kaen here!

I'll be right there, let me just plant this last red pepper... Aaaaw, yeah! Ten with one! Achievement unlocked, too? Well, awesome, I guess! *turns around* Sorry about that, but the story I bring to you today made me eager to go back and finish the game it crosses over with Naruto again! Ah, the mini-games and the Zen garden are nice too! Heh, the more game-savyy of you have probably already guessed what game is from my little hints, for all the others, let me introduce Naruto VS Zombies from Crisis, a X-Over between Naruto and Plants VS Zombies, the awesome game from Popcap!

For those who've never played it, Plants VS Zombies is a sorta tower defense game which pits, as the title says, Plants VS Zombies. You're their owner and gardener, and they protect your lawn, backyard and more from the waves of incoming zombies, day and night! It's really fun, you should definitely try it! I reccomend the Game of the Year version from Steam!

A bit difficult to cross over with Naruto, you say? Well, Crisis went and did it successfully! The result is a great humor/horror story which earns a 9/10 on the Meinos-ometer!

Let's see in detail what led me so up the scale of judgment, shall we?

What I liked

Himawari-chan, for instance! Cutest plant ever, except maybe for Seline from To Love Ru. Also, it helps that I imagine her having Laura Shigihara's voice. Who is she? Here, you lazy bums! She's an awesome singer!

Returning to the story, I liked the simple yet humorous way Naruto and Madara chance upon their guides to growing the Plants and the Undead, respectively a postal order and a book. Then, there was the thing with Orochimaru AND Sasuke's argument with a Repeater. But really, this whole story is a great mixture of funn-A, while still managing to keep the Zombies a believable threat. Kudos to the author!

Yeah, you win. But where's the fun?
What I didn't like

Well, I guess that when the first Plants/Zombies clash finally came, I was expecting something with a little more... Punch. As well paced as the levels from the game. You know what I'm talking about if you've ever played it. But, hey. Still fifth chapter, and another fight is coming in the next one , so I'm keeping my hopes up!

My tips to the author

I - I guess the problem with the fight scene was that it was just one huge wave of zombies, instead of small amounts slowly building up to the big wave, like in the original game. Orochimaru's own struggle was much more closer to that. Take example from your own writing and you're set, pal. :)

II - Also, I've seen that you're making it so that growing plants isn't a Naruto-only skill, but nonetheless I think you shouldn't spread it too much, or it starts losing its unicity and attractive. A handful of people being the only hope for the world against hordes of undead brain-eaters? Cool, exciting, funny. A platoon of them? Not so much.

Hoping to keep seeing story-writing of this level, and the same goes for spelling and grammar, I reconfirm 9/10 and bid you farewell.

Meinos Kaen out!

  1. Wow. 9/10? I'm -immensely- flattered!

As far as your critique on the first zombie fight... yeah, not my best work. The description of them being surrounded was to A) make it clear that there were significantly more zombies that they weren't seeing than those they were at first, much like in the game when you kill a few and you know that there's plenty more waiting to invade your lawn; and B) give the reader a clear reason as to why the ninjas don't just retreat from the situation.

I intend to be pulling out quite a few more stops for the bridge though.

As for who will and won't be learning this stuff, well I've got all sorts of notes on that. I'll say that I'm working on a percentage, a -low- one, rather than a hard number to make this feel more like a realistic skill and not some sort of superpower lottery. This includes skill tiers among those who will be capable of using it.

On the other hand, there will be entire -clans- that will be incapable of this for one reason or another. And there will be all sorts of other reasons why individuals can't pull it off. *SPOILER*At least three members of the Konoha 12 will -never- learn how to channel 'solar chakra'*/SPOILER*

    1. Hmmm... I guess I'm too used to the handful of chosen ones type of story. I guess you want to make it a marketed skill... Well, it kind of IS. XD Well, as long as you manage to keep it entertaining, I won't bother. And now, to Beghouled Twist!
